La Borinqueña Mexicatessen was a small family-run Mexican deli in Old Oakland run by Tina Tamale and her parents and grandparents before her. Its early hours catered to the downtown lunch crowd, but you could also buy their house-made chorizo and ready-made meat, vegetarian and vegan tamales to go from their refrigerated section, along with supplies like masa.
After 71 years and three generations in business, in July 2015 Tina announced that they were closing La Borinqueña.
