photo CC SA-NC-BY Our OaklandWhile the native Coast Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) get most of the attention, a few rare Dawn Redwoods (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) exist in Oakland.
The Dawn Redwood, native to China, is a deciduous conifer (!) that loses its needles seasonally. The needles also undergo a fall color change.
