Acme House of Music is a music store and school that was established in Oakland in 1969 by Julio Rose. He ran the store until 2009 when he was in his mid 80s. The store was taken over by close friend Annette Loveless and her husband at that juncture. They kept the store in the Laurel District where it had been located since it's inception through until 2013. 3715 MacArthur Blvd. was the address at this juncture. In 2013 they moved the store to it's current location at 4444 Piedmont Avenue.

Called “a mom-and-pop shop since 1969,” Acme House of Music—long a gem in the Laurel District—recently moved to a new, larger space near the top of Piedmont Avenue. It’s a retail, repair, and artistic space that defies easy categorization. The staff and teachers offer lessons and workshops, and they fix, rent, and sell vintage and new instruments as well as electronic equipment. In myriad, mellifluous ways, this funky, home-grown business promotes harmony and creativity in the community.

Below is an excerpt from an online review prior to the change of ownership.

Primarily they offer music lessons. Guitar, Bass, Trumpet, Saxophone, Piano, drums and more. The emphasis is on jazz. Rumor has it that several of their instructors played with the likes of Coltrane, Miles Davis, Jimmy Smith and others back in the day. The place has been cleaned up lately and the inventory of instruments and accessories has been extended. They have also added an art gallery to the establishment featuring artists based in the local neighborhood. It was listed in the SF Chronicle as the number one spot to visit in the Laurel District. They have been in business for 45 years. Throughout the same owner, J Rose, has been at the helm. J was a journeyman jazz drummer himself and has some incredible stories to tell.
