Woodmen of the World is a fraternal benefit society started in 1890, and based in Omaha, Nebraska. Various Oaklanders were members, a fact sometimes noted in their obituaries or on their grave markers. Some of them were buried with distinctive 'woodmen' grave markers that look like tree trunks, which were provided as a death benefit.
Related are Women of Woodcraft, Woodmen Circles, and Neighbors of Woodcraft, which are now part of the Woodmen organization. 1
The 1913 directory lists "Woodmen of the World Alameda County" at 1705 San Pablo Avenue.
The Pacific Building at 610 - 16th Street built in 1913 has "W.O.W." inscribed below the name; it was constructed to be their local headquarters (as well as provide meeting spaces for other organizations.)
