St. Mark's Evangelical Church was a church that started in West Oakland as St. Mark's Evangelical German Lutheran Church (or Evangelisch Lutherische St. Marcus Kirche). In 1924, the church moved to a new building at 58th and Telegraph. Later they were sometimes known as St. Mark's Evangelical Reformed Church.

The 58th and Telegraph building has been home to Memorial Tabernacle Church since 1960.

1898 directory listing

The first reference found is from 1890, when a group filed articles of incorporation. In 1898, Rev. A. Jatho was the pastor, and they met on Filbert Street near 7th Street. [ Note: there's a mention of them meeting at Filbert and First in 1898, but that may been an error, as the directory lists them between 7th and 8th. ]

In 1923, they sold the church on Filbert Street and met at the Hermann Sons' Hall at 1125 West Street while they searched for a new location.

In February 1924, the church held a groundbreaking ceremony at 58th and Telegraph. The new building at 58th and Telegraph was dedicated in September 1924. Wythe, Blaine, and Olson designed the building. Rev. Eugene Baltzer was the pastor at the time. 2

There is a last reference to St. Mark's Evangelical Church in 1959. It's unknown if they closed, merged with another congregation, or what happened.
