History
Dr. Samuel Merritt wanted a hospital founded in his name, so some years after his death, his sister carried out his wishes. The hospital merged with Peralta Hospital in 1982 to form the Merritt-Peralta Medical Center. In 1992, that merged with Providence Hospital to form Summit Medical Center.
