The Sallie Rutherford Thaler Memorial Fountain is a (currently non-working) fountain in Lakeside Park near the Gardens at Lake Merritt. It was designed by Irwin Luckman, and dedicated March 5, 1961, in memory of Sallie Rutherford Thaler.
There is a plaque on the side of the fountain reading:
Memorial Presented to the City of Oakland by Aloha Parlor No. 106 Native Daughters of the Golden West In memory of our past president Sallie Rutherford Thaler May 19, 1888 - March 8, 1958 A lifelong resident of Oakland Grand Secretary, NDGW for 31 years Dedicated March 5, 1961
Thaler died March 8, 1958. Friends said she loved nature, and particularly loved the location near the lake, which was about a mile from their home. At the dedication ceremony, mayor Clifford Rishell accepted the fountain on behalf of the city. Also in attendance were parks superintendent William Penn Mott and Andre T. Fontes, chairman of the parks commission.
