1936 ad 1

Pirates Den Lounge was a bar and lounge at 2114 Broadway (now 2214 Broadway after address realignment following the creation of West Grand). It opened in 1936, next door to the Pirates Cave Grotto, a seafood restaurant at 2116 Broadway which had opened in 1934. It was started by Adrien Chanquet and someone named Staley.

NB: The name was sometimes written Pirates' Den or Pirate's Den, but more often just Pirates Den.

The first mention was in an April 1936 ad congratulating Pirates Cave Grotto on their recent expansion. The ad suggests Chanquet and Staley were going to call it Pirates Inn, but by the time it opened in May 1936, 1 the name was Pirates Den. Staley's involvement seems to have been short-lived, as his name disappears from ads in November 1936.

Pirates Den was open until at least 1949 when they were among restaurants and lounges hit by a strike of the AFL culinary and bartenders union.

By the 1967 reverse directory, the location was Sullivan's Cocktail Lounge.
