A Parklet is a temporary or semi-permanent extension of the sidewalk to make more space available for pedestrians instead of cars. Oakland has several semi-permanent parklets near businesses, with plans for more on the way. Each year on Park(ing) Day, more businesses and individuals create temporary parklets.
As originally conceived and as implemented in Oakland, the parklets are by definition public spaces, even if they are in front of a particular business.
