Oakland Fire Dept. Station 31 was at 4909 Calaveras Avenue at Buell Street near Mills College. It was demolished for the construction of the MacArthur Freeway.
The property for this station was acquired from Mills College in 1942. 1 The city put out a call for bids to construct this station along with Station 29 and Station 27 in 1948. 2,3 The State of California acquired the property to construct the MacArthur Freeway in 1961, after the City agreed to accept $78,734 as payment for the property. 1,4 The current Station 17, dedicated in April 1961, was constructed as a replacement for this station.
