The Street Academy is a product of the civil rights and social justice movements and its operation reflects those values.  The school was established by then superintendent Marcus Foster, the National Institute of Education and the Bay Area Urban League.  It offers a warm, small school environment for high school students, with a  curriculum, that fulfills all of the requirements to attend a four year college.    Each student has a Counselor-Teacher-Mentor who is responsible for assisting the student with school work, immediate problems, planning for the future, and staying in touch with the parents.

The school has had an ethnic studies requirement ever since its founding in 1973.
