The Oakland Art Gallery opened on the 3rd floor of the Oakland Municipal Auditorium (now the Kaiser Convention Center) in 1916, originally under the auspices of the Oakland Public Museum, whose director at the time, Robert B. Harshe, was an artist. It was later called the Oakland Art Museum.
