OPPORTUNITY IS KNOCKING: The Secrets To College Success For Oakland Students & Parents
March 18, 2014
Oakland Tech High School Auditorium
6:30pm - 8:30pm.
20% of American high school seniors (1 out of every 5) admitted tocollege never make it to the first day of class due to a variety of causes during the Spring or Summer of their senior year, a phenomenon known as "Spring Melt" or "Summer Melt". This problem is only exacerbated for groups that are under-represented on college. In order to combat this issue, East Bay College Fund is holding their college persistence night to inform not just students, but parents as well, about the key activities they must participate in for the student to not only make it to college but then persist, meaning continuing successfully through college even in the face of difficulty. Attendees
will be able to:
* Hear from current and former college students from Oakland who have gone through the process
* Hear from other parents who have successfully navigated the college process
* Leave with a handbook with information about what it takes to get to college and be successful
* Sign students up for EBCF's College Crews, a college peer mentorship & leadership program
* One student in attendance will win a $1,000 scholarship!!!!
