Nan Yang was the first Burmese restaurant in Oakland, opened in 1983. In 1992 owner-chef Philip Chu opened a second location at 6048 College Avenue in Rockridge. Chu eventually closed down the original location and focused on the Rockridge location.
The first restaurant Philip Chu owned was the Hofbrau.
