History

Montclair Branch, 1930
photo from Oakland History Room
In 1930 the construction of the library was funded by wealthy benefactor Chauncey W. Gibson, who donated for libraries in Oakland and Middletown, in Lake County. 1 Mr. Gibson’s gift purchased the land and the new building at a total cost of $6,600. Designed and built by contractor C.C. Rosenberry and it opened in March of  1930. 2 The idea for the storybook style came from Mrs. Charles Fisher, a member of the board of the Homes and Children’s Alliance, who wanted a library that would be cozy and welcoming. The children's room and patio at the rear were added in 1965. The second addition, which involved filling in the patio for an expanded Children's Room, took place in 1999.
