Joseph Addison Mayhew (1825 - October 24, 1901) was the 3rd Alameda County sheriff during the 1860's, a cattleman, a businessman, and one of the founding trustees of Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California.
In 1869 Joseph A. Mayhew's occupation was listed as 'farmer' in the Oakland Directory.
Mayhew was married to Ann Frances Fisher in ____. In 1858 he built her a home in Newark.
Mayhew and his uncle, Jonathan Mayhew (1819-1886) were business partners, and owned a fleet of bay sloops and schooners which operated between Mayhew’s Landing in Newark, California and San Francisco. The two men, both known as “Captain Mayhew,” jointly owned a lumber yard and warehouses where they built vessels.
Although listed in the 1869 Directory, Mayhew was not in the 1876 Directory, nor the 1887 Directory.
