The Jesse Matteson House, also known as Sunset House, was built in 1905 for lumber business owner Jesse V. Matteson. It was also the 11th restoration project of author, restoration consultant, and house restorer Jane Powell, who died before the restoration could be completed. The house is at 2708 Sunset Avenue in the Fruitvale District.
Although it is an Arts and Crafts-style bungalow, it is large—more than 3,800 square feet—so Powell called it her "Bunga-mansion." 1 It has unusual sweeping gable ends, and large overhangs, giving the house a distinctive look. One article says it "looks like a cross between a pagoda and a Viking ship." 2
