The Jarvis House is a nicely restored Victorian at 11th Avenue and East 23rd. Before renumbering, it was at 1652 - 11th Avenue. At some point it was divided into apartments and now has addresses 2300-2304 - 11th Avenue.

The house and then-owner Sam Cohen won a Partners in Preservation Award from Oakland Heritage Alliance in 2003 for the restoration. 1

It's not yet known when it was built, but the 1892-1893 directory lists Matthew Perrott, farmer, and Leonard A. Robertson, student, living at 1652 - 11th Avenue. An 1893 article mentions a Miss Margaret Robertson. The 1894 directory again lists Matthew Perrott, but this as a capitalist, as well as L.A. Robertson. Matthew Perrott had married Mrs. Belle Robertson in 1890 in San Francisco. Matthew is sometimes spelled Mathew.

Howard Sanford Jarvis and his family lived there in 1898 and were there until at least 1906. The Jarvis family has connections to the area around Newark, CA. Jarvis Landing was either named for Howard or for his father, and daughter Neva Todd Jarvis married Ezra Decoto.

The 1908 directory lists Alfred D. Baxley, clerk for Oakland Traction Co., Fannie Baxley, clerk at the Post Office, and J. William Baxley, carpenter, as boarding at 1652 - 11th Avenue. Directories over the following years give different names, suggesting they were also boarders or renters.
