The Heald's College Building is at 16th Street and San Pablo Avenue. It was designed by architect Charles Mau and built in 1906-1907 for Dr. Samuel Kahn, brother of Israel Kahn. 1,2 It originally had 4 stories; 2 more stories were added in 1918. Heald's Business College moved in after it was completed and occupied the upper 3 floors; after the 1918 expansion, they moved up to occupy the new upper 3 floors.

The building was converted to wartime housing in 1944.

It is listed as the Stewart Apartments in the 1967 directory. It was later the Drake Hotel.

The building was damaged in the 1989 earthquake. After rehabilitation work, it reopened in 1994 as the Adcock-Joyner Apartments, with 50 apartments for low income residents above, and job training in the Business Education Center on the ground floor. It was named for Rev. Isaiah Adcock and Lawrence Joyner, founders of the East Oakland Fruitvale Planning Council which was part of the joint effort to rehabilitate the building. 1

The building is part of the Downtown Oakland Historic District.
