Golden Gate Junior High School was at 62nd and San Pablo from c.1922. The campus is now the Berkley Maynard Academy.
The earlier Bay Public School was converted to a junior high school as part of a building bond measure in 1919. A new building was constructed in 1922-1923. George P. Sackett was principal at the time.
The 1928 addition for the grammar school was designed by architect George O'Brien, and it was estimated it would cost $110,000. 3
In 1938, the building was closed when state inspectors found the building was unsafe. Students were housed in 17 temporary classrooms (note the ghost images on the 1950 Sanborn excerpt). The work involved replacing the exterior brick with stucco, and interior bracing. 1
Beloved educator Verdese Carter began teaching at Golden Gate Junior High in 1954.
Faced with shrinking enrollment, the school was closed in 2005, and the Berkeley Maynard Academy opened as a charter school. 2
