The Gables Apartments are at 5928 Telegraph Avenue at the corner of McAuley. The building unsurprisingly has many gables, and was built in the early 1900s.
Zillow, et al, say the building was constructed in 1916. However, a building with a very similar footprint appears on the 1911 Sanborn. This suggests the building was constructed earlier with 4 apartments, then in 1916 or a later date, expanded some and remodeled into 11 smaller apartments. A December 1923 classified ad calls them "just completed," so that may be when the remodel happened. Another says "new, modern, 3-room apartments." 1
The first reference to the 5942-5948 addresses found in the newspapers is from 1908. A 1910 ad refers to 5-room flats.
Note the adjusted addresses between the 1911 and 1950 Sanborn maps, and that McAuley was previously called Rose Street. Also note an earlier update on the 1950 map showing 12 apartments.
