G&W Markets was a local chain of 3 grocery stores in the 1930s and 1940s. It was run by brothers George Sturtevant and Warren Sturtevant, with 3 locations: 3126 Seminary. 2314 High Street, and 6112 La Salle. 1
It's not clear when the first G&W Market opened. The 1938 article about the opening of the Montclair store mentions the other two, and says they had been "in the grocery business" for 10 years. The permits for the Seminary location were granted only the year before in October 1937. 2
The 1935 directory lists George and wife Dollie living at 22 Murdock Ct., and Warren and his wife Rilla living across the court at 21 Murdock Ct. Both brothers were working for Storm's Market, nearby at 3110 Seminary (5845 after renumbering). 3 The first G&W Market was built just a few doors up at 3126 Seminary (5863 after renumbering). George and Warren's sister Ina Bella was married to Irvin Raphel Storm; it's unknown if Storm's Market was connect to Irvin or his family.
By 1950, the High St. location had become F&N Market. 4 By 1967, it had become Island Market.
