The Friends of Joaquin Miller Park is a group devoted to improving, maintaining, and sharing Joaquin Miller Park with the community.
The organization began as a working group, put together by then-council member Jean Quan, with stakeholders from Oakland Parks and Recreation, Oakland Public Works Agency, Oakland Police Department, naturalists, historians, cyclists, equestrians, hikers, and neighbors. They accept funds through their 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor, Friends of Oakland Parks & Recreation (FOPR), and have accomplished an impressive amount of work as of 2013. They've partnered with Friends of Sausal Creek, Volunteers for Outdoor California, and other groups to do lots of trail work, signage, and habitat restoration all over the park. They also worked with the Oakland Police and Fire dispatch to get the city-owned Joaquin Miller Park into the emergency dispatch database.
