Flax Art & Design is an art supply store at 1501 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way. It moved to Oakland in March, 2016, after 78 years in San Francisco.
The business started in New York in 1918. 2 The store was opened in SF by Herman Flax in 1938, then run by his son Philip Flax, and the business is currently run by his grandson Howard Flax. 1
The colorful design on the building was painted in 2016 by Heather Day of the Athen B. Gallery. There are two murals on the back next to the parking lot, the Tyrannosaurus Mural by Nychos and the Flax Mural by Natty Rebel.
