1911

Elmhurst School or Elmhurst Grammar School was the public school in the town of Elmhurst before it was annexed to Oakland in 1909.

(One postcard referred to it as the Jones Avenue School. 98th Avenue was known as Jones Avenue before the annexation.)

Teachers

Joseph D. (J.D.) Armstrong became principal in 1896; he had previously been principal of the San Lorenzo School. He taught the 7th and 8th grade classes. He retired as principal in 1906 and later served on the Hayward city council.

Building

The first building was dedicated in July 1894. A new room was added in 1901.

By 1903, they needed more room, and a large addition was proposed. A bond was passed, and the addition was constructed in 1904.
