The Chinese Independent Baptist Church is at 280 - 8th St. and dates back to 1906.
Its roots go back to the Chinese Independent Baptist Church of San Francisco. Following the 1906 earthquake, part of the congregation moved to Oakland and began worshiping here. The church continued meeting in two locations, and became officially autonomous in 1967. 1
The law at the time didn't allow Chinese Americans to purchase property, so the American Baptist Home Mission Society was the official holder of the deed. The deed was transferred in 1920 when the law was changed. 2
