The Cathedral Building Mural was on the back of the Cathedral Building from 1976 to 1986, long before the United Nations Mural was painted in 2015.

In 1976 as part of the U.S. bicentennial, the Golden Gate Paint and Coatings Association held a contest to design a mural for the space. The winning design was from George Mead. The Flecto Company and others provided the paint, and the approximate $6,000 cost of painting was covered by various organizations. 2

The mural was painted over in 1986 because the current owner planned to expose some of the windows on that side of the building, and the mural had been deteriorating for several years. 3
