The Castlewood Apartments were 47 units in a 6-story structure at 658 - 12th Street at Grove. The building opened c.1914 and was designed by Charles W. McCall. They were later known as the Oakland Court Apartments.
The apartments on the top floor each had a sleeping porch on the roof, accessible by a private stairway. 1
There was a fire in the building in 1916, leading to the trial of Valerie Higgins, aka Madame Beaucaire, aka the Archduchess Marie Valerie of Austria. 2
The 1950 Sanborn map labels it Oakland Court, and that it was formerly Castlewood Hotel. The ground floor included retail space, and the addresses 650 - 664 - 12th Street.
The building was demolished [ in ? ]. The area is now part of Preservation Park, and Grove is now Martin Luther King, Jr. Way.
