The Carter Gilmore Sports Complex (sometimes referred to as Carter-Gilmore/Greenman Field) is a City of Oakland park named in honor of former Oakland City Councilman Carter Gilmore who was the first African American elected to the Council, as well as a civil rights activist and community leader. The park was originally known as Greenman Field, but was renamed in 2006, less than a month before Mr. Gilmore passed away. 1
The Greenman Field name dates back to 1950. The city gave the name as a memorial to Charles H. Greenman, once principal of Lockwood School, and to the Lockwood students who lost their lives in WWI and WWII. 2
