The Capwell Central Market was a block-sized marketplace at 19th Street and Telegraph which opened in 1927. The following year the Fox Oakland Theatre was across 19th, and H.C. Capwell's was built across Telegraph. The anchor tenant was a Pon Honor Store, which was later a Safeway. In 1939, it was reopened as Market Centre, with Payless Drugs as the anchor tenant.
In addition to being on a streetcar line, the market had a large, free parking lot behind the building.
