Caffe 817 was a chill cafe in Old Oakland. It was a good spot if you're in the area ... perhaps for a Friday Chinatown Farmer's Market. They had outdoor sidewalk tables and free wifi. Caffe 817 originally opened in 1993, and was acquired by new owners Scott and Emily Goldenberg in late 2011. 1

The cafe closed for good on November 11, 2023. The owners' final Instagram post blamed the shutdown on a number of factors, beginning with the fact that they were unable to install a ventilation hood to meet requirements enforced by the Alameda County Public Health Department, meaning that they were forced to change their menu format and business model. 2 The Covid-19 pandemic, increased crime, and the reopening of Washington Street to traffic and the resulting loss of an outdoor seating area created after the beginning of the pandemic also played a role in the closure. 2
