The Bay Public School was the first school in what was then known as Klinknerville, constructed in 1872 at 62nd and San Pablo. The original building was moved, and a new building constructed in 1892. The area was annexed to Oakland in 1897, and the school later became the first home of Golden Gate Junior High School.

By 1892, the Bay School District realized the school was too small, and decided to issue bonds for the construction of a new school.

From 1891 to 1894, Nellie (or Nelle) Eckles was the principal. She resigned in 1894 to marry Beverly Lacy Hodghead, who had been previously been principal of the school, and was later the first mayor of Berkeley.

One notable alum was Fred B. Balzar, who was later the 15th governor of Nevada. He was born in Nevada, but after attending school in San Francisco, he lived nearby with his aunt on Marshall Street and attended the Bay Public School. 3
