The Asian Branch Library is location in Oakland's Chinatown, and is one of the sixteen libraries in the Oakland Public Library system. It opened in 1981.

The Asian Branch Library is unique among public library branches in the United States as it houses eight Asian language collections. The larger language collections are Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. The smaller collections are Khmer, Lao, Tagalog, and Thai. Additionally, the branch has an Asian Interest collection in English focusing specifically on Asia, Asian heritage, culture, and history, an Asian American Experience collection, and Asian immigrant history.

The branch is equipped with 9 computers with internet access. Computer and new technology classes are offered in Cantonese and Mandarin.

Events include Bilingual Toddler Storytime, which meets every Wednesday and Bilingual Family Storytime, which meets every Saturday, both of which are in English and Mandarin.


  • Game and Craft Day, Wednesdays, 4-5pm. Teens 12-18 are welcome to our friendly after school program for homework, videos, cards and board games, arts and crafts. For more info: 238-3400
  • Bilingual Toddler Storytime, Wednesdays, 10:30am: Songs, active rhymes, and stories especially for ages 18 months to 3 years. Meets every Wednesday, followed by playtime. Presented in English and Mandarin. For large groups, please call in advance. For more info: 238-3400

  • Regular Teen Programs: including crafts, makerspace and technology, and book and comic giveaways

  • Food Stamp Program: Staff from the Alameda County Food Bank will help apply for food stamps and connect you with food programs in your neighborhood. 3rd Tuesdays, 2:30-4:30 PM

  • Computer Basics in Cantonese and Mandarin: For Asian elderly and new Americans. Registration in person required. Call 238-3400 for Schedule/times. Thursdays & Saturdays.

  • Teen Advisory: Come tell the library what YOU think the library should be doing for you. Third Thursday, 4PM. Call 238-3400 for location.

  • Family Storytime: Saturdays, 11 AM.

The Asian Community Library opened in 1975, sharing space at the Park Boulevard Branch Library before moving to the Main Library in 1978. It moved again in 1981 to become the Asian Branch Library.
