ACTIVITIES AMONG NEGROES

By Delilah L. Beasley

One of the prettiest weddings, this season in colored social circles was that of Miss Genevive Adelaide Parker to McCoy Jones, which was solemnized with a double ring ceremony Thursday evening in Park's A. M. E. Chapel, Oakland. Rev. A. M. Ward, pastor, performed the ceremony. The bride is the only daughter of Mrs. Beatrice Countee, and a student of Teacher's College, San Francisco. Her mother organist for the church, and as a compliment the full rested choir rendered a program of bridal music and songs previous to the ceremony which began at 8:30 p. m.

Upon the entrance of the bridal party Miss Pauline Speece sang "Because" followed by Julian Wilder singing "All Mine Alone." Miss Maxine Blackburn at the organ began the wedding march. In the party was Mrs. Mary Jones, mother of the groom.  She wore a gown of gray crepe; Mrs. Countee, mother of the bride, who wore a gown of green faille crepe, black picture hat and silver slippers; Mrs. W. D. Stewart, gowned in gray crepe; Mrs. Georgia Marshall, Leavenworth, Kansas, aunt of the bride, wore a close fitting model with flare skirt of deep orchid faille crepe; Mrs. Josephine Malse, aunt of the groom, was gowned in blue silk.

The bridesmaids wore gowns of pastel shades of chiffon, picture hats, crystal necklace, gift of the brie, and carried Colonial bouquets. They were Misses Elizabeth. Jones, Thelma Johnson, Minneola Lewis, Loet Allen. The matron of honor was Mrs. Ruth Larch; maid of honor Miss Josephine Rice; flower girl little Bettle Owen Hall, in rose pink silk; ring bearer Master Edward Hope Hall.

The bride's dress was shell pink satin with long tulle veil fastened to her Coiffure with a cluster of orange blossoms. Her only jewelry was a shell pink necklace of pearls, gift of the groom. She was given in marriage by her cousin, W. D. Stewart of San Francisco. The happy couple received many beautiful and useful gifts, and will go to housekeeping in Berkeley with best wishes of a host of friends.

LABOR BAY CELEBRATION

The Junior N. A. A. C. P. of Oakland held their annual Labor Day celebration Monday in Elmhurst Gardens, with a representative crowd in attendance from Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco.

Brooks, who was from San Francisco and won in 60 yard dash. In the afternoon the Juniors rendered a program, the most outstanding number being a solo by Irvin Myers of San Francisco.

V. F. WARS

Attending the recent convention held in Sacramento of Veterans of Foreign Wars, the O’Reilly Bluett post and auxiliary occupied a position in the convention activities. F. C. Brooks, Sacramento, is commander, and Mrs. Garland Jones is president of the auxiliary. There are seven V. of F. W. posts of colored veterans in California. Last month when the California state convention of American Legion convened in Oakland, aside from the honors received by the Benjamine Bowle post of Los Angeles, the Col. Charles Young post of Oakland had the distinction of their commander, Lieut. Leonard Richardson, introducing a resolution which was one of the few passed by this body. The only colored delegate who will represent California at the forthcoming national convention of the American Legion in Portland will be Norman Houston, past commander Benjamine Bowie post, Los Angeles. He is a former Oakland boy who moved to Los Angeles and is one of the officials of the Golden State Life Insurance Company, the only one west of the Mississippi river operated and owned by members of his race.
