1912 Sanborn excerpt

3030 - 38th Avenue is an apartment building at the corner of 38th Avenue and Angelo Avenue in Allendale. It was built c.1912 as two ground-level shops, 3030 and 3034, and a meeting hall on the second floor.

The 1913 directory lists 3034 as Allendale Pharmacy, run by George B. Flint. It was also listed as Station 17 for the post office.

1913 directory listing

In 1915 it was listed as the new Allendale Deposit Station of the Oakland Library, G.B. Flint, custodian. 1

The meeting hall is listed as Mutual Hall in the 1930 directory, and 3034 - 38th Avenue is listed as a Mutual Stores grocery.

It's unknown when the building was converted to apartments, and if the second floor was converted first or the whole building at once. One of the earliest references found so far to 3030 or 3034 as a residential address is from 1951.

The 1950 Sanborn map shows the building with four addresses, 3026, 3030, and 3034 - 38th, and 3907 Angelo. It labels 3026 as a shop, and 3034 as a dwelling, which suggests the conversion to apartments was done in stages.
