This is a collection of ways to write "Oakland" as a place name in languages where it's something other than "O-a-k-l-a-n-d":

  • Amharic: ኦክላንድ
  • Arabic: أوكلاند
  • Bengali: ওকল্যান্ড
  • Chinese:

    Romanization
    1. 屋崙 屋仑 uk1 leon4 wū lún
    2. 奧克蘭 奥克兰 ou3 haak1 laan4 ào kè lán
The first is more common in Cantonese contexts and the second in Mandarin contexts. Both are simply phonetic and the characters together in either name don't "mean" anything, whether about oaks or anything else. (Also, just to be hysterical, Auckland, New Zealand goes by the exact same names in Chinese. In the below image you see both names, both in traditional characters.
